Lindenhurst has a housing situation that no other town on our list shares. The canal community sits one to two feet above sea level, tidal flooding happens two or three times in a normal year, and Sandy put parts of the village under eight feet of water.
Since then, street after street has been lifted. Houses that used to sit at grade now stand twelve feet up on pilings, many of them through the state elevation program. That has produced a set of repair needs you simply do not see elsewhere on the South Shore.
What Lindenhurst homes need
Elevated houses have a lot more exterior to maintain. A lifted house means long exterior stair runs, landings and railings that are exposed on all sides and take weather from every direction. They need attention far more often than the same components on a house at grade. We maintain and repair them. Worth being clear though: rebuilding a structural stair or replacing a landing outright is permit work and needs a licensed contractor, and we will tell you when you have crossed that line rather than taking the job.
Everything swells. Between the water table, the canals and the humidity off the bay, interior doors and drawers here stick seasonally in a way they do not further inland. Many can be adjusted so they work year-round instead of only in February, and that is a small job with a disproportionate effect on how the house feels.
Unfinished punch lists from the rebuild years. A lot of Lindenhurst homes were repaired, raised or rebuilt in a compressed period with variable quality, and a great deal of it was left ninety per cent done. Trim never fitted, doors never adjusted, patches never painted, fixtures never reseated. Closing a list like that out changes how the whole house feels.
Hardware does not last here. Salt air plus standing water means anything zinc-plated corrodes quickly. Stainless costs slightly more and lasts several times longer.

Stainless hardware, properly coated exterior fixtures, and paint systems specified for coastal exposure. We would rather fit the right thing once than the cheap thing three times, and near the canals that gap is much wider than it is inland.
